California 117 Test - simplified
The newly revised Cal 117 2013 test method uses a cigarette as an ignition source where the earlier version used an open flame. Both methods evaluate the ease of ignition along with the char length to determine a pass/fail rating. In accordance with the updated testing requirements, all new fabrics (introduced January 1st 2015 and beyond) shipped to the State of California, must pass Cal 117 2013.
All upholstery products introduced prior to December 31st 2014, are "grandfathered in". However, depending on the local fire marshal' s requirements, furniture manufacturers and end users in California can still use the original Cal 117, UFAC or NFPA 260 certificates going forward.
